Search for the Hero Inside...

Most people serious about their running can peel off their Personal Bests at 5km, 10km, ½ Marathon and Marathon distances. They’re times that become etched into one's DNA and are comparable measures, that define our ability to block out pain to achieve results. The individual distance PB's are linked by the athletes VO2 max. And as a Coach they tell me a lot about the person behind the times as some athletes prefer shorter to longer endurance races and vice versa. I mean, heart pounding, lung bursting efforts aren't everyone's idea of fun. But getting better results can be fun and last forever.

I’m only highlighting this as recently, many of the athletes’ I’ve been working with have achieved fresh Personal Bests which would have been unimaginable prior to our working together. Nothing new there, especially if you employ the use of a professional coach, I mean you’d expect results. The thing is the recent client results are off the scale and people relatively new to competing are achieving times are now qualifying for national and even international teams at a range of distances.

 Now, it could of course be down to the periodisation achieved from the training plans that I’ve developed over the years. However, I believe it’s more than that. It's from coaching the athlete as a whole person where we consider everything that could possibly impact on performance. Health, Wealth, Relationships & Employment are some of the bigger issues that we negotiate. We also need to be have resolved any of the above to have a proper focussed clarity come race day. In addition, any feelings of anxiety or low self-esteem are investigated and hopefully put to bed.

Place - if the planets line up, great achievements occur.

 

Well, that’s happening and as more and more people since lockdown have come into the sport, I’ve been able to identify and give people new goals and horizons to chase. 

 

It’s a lot of fun!

 

Sometimes we don’t know what we are good at until someone identifies the ‘ingredient X’ that lies within us that can go a lifetime undiscovered. I’m currently on a mission to find and work with fresh talent and it doesn’t matter where the current starting point is. Together we’ll decide what works, what doesn’t work, strengths and further strengths and identify the possibilities.
