Cars - Gary Numan

I feel safest of all - Numan
It’s funny what you remember from your childhood, and although I have mixed emotions, I do have warm thoughts of family holidays (always in the UK) and regular visits to the Midland Educational in my home town of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Now, if you grew up anywhere near where I did, will know just how magical the 'Mid-Ed', as we knew it, was to any child that ever went there.

Sure, it was a toy shop but also a stationer and a record store. It's full range of Corgi Cars, Hornby Trains and Subbuteo teams were just more than my young mind could take in, in just one brief visit - add in a real life well and my mind was blown – I didn’t even mention the Airfix.

Anyway, it will and always will be to my mind, the best shop ever. Even now some sixty years on I can remember buying my little blue Corgi 226 Morris Mini Minor and still have it.

It looks totally battered now which isn't surprising as it's accompanied me on my last two Marathon des Sables, but it is probably my most important non-human possession.

And yes you might laugh, but the magic I felt all those years ago kinda lives on and the positive memories must live on too as a reminder that we need to see life sometimes as a small child to endeavour to deal with less magical things we deal with today.

Did you ever visit the Mid-Ed?
